RBI has changed the deadline to 31-03-2013. Public needs to surrender the old cheque books to their respective banks.It will be advisable that the Bank customers reconcile the existing stock of old cheque leaves and request their bankers to delete/stop payment of cheque leaves not reconciled and in future to keep proper record of cheques issued, cleared, pending to be cleared, destroyed, cancelled or stolen. It will be better if the customers reconciles their cheque leaves periodically to rule out any pilferage.
